Unlocking the Power of Customer Reviews to Grow Your Business

November 20, 20244 min read

Introduction

In today’s digital marketplace, online reviews are one of the most effective tools for building trust, credibility, and visibility. While advertising and word-of-mouth remain powerful, the influence of reviews is undeniable—nearly 93% of consumers say online reviews impact their purchase decisions, according to a survey by Podium. By simply asking your current members for reviews, you can create a positive feedback loop that attracts more potential members and strengthens loyalty with your existing customer base.

The Importance of Reviews for Businesses

Reviews are a form of social proof, a psychological phenomenon where people look to the actions and opinions of others to determine their own behavior. When potential members see a high volume of positive reviews, they are more likely to trust your business and make a purchase.

According to BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey, 85% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. This trust translates directly into consumer behavior—businesses with an average rating of 4 stars or higher are more likely to attract new customers than those with lower ratings.

PSF Ocala and Freedom Jiu Jitsu Study

Two of my members were able to gain 50 and 60 new reviews respectively after we launched our review request campaign.  The campaigns were simple.  We sent out a mass SMS to all active gym members ask for a review, both gyms offered different incentives: PSF Ocala offered $20 off one month’s membership; Freedom Jiu Jitsu offered a free t-shirt with proof of review.  Not only did the campaigns achieve massive success, but most members didn’t even want the incentive!  Turns out having a great environment for people to train in is more than enough of an incentive.

Steps to Implement Your Own Review Request Strategy

  1. Choose the Right Timing
Timing is crucial. Asking for reviews right after a members has had a positive experience increases the likelihood of a positive response. A simple message like, “Thanks for training with us! We’d love to hear your feedback,” sent after a period of time the member has been active.

  2. Make the Process Easy and Direct
The easier it is to leave a review, the more likely members will do it. Include direct links to your Google or Yelp review page in emails or SMS messages. Avoid making members search for where to leave their feedback.

Offer Incentives to Encourage Participation
While incentives aren’t necessary, they can be a nice extra touch. Offering a small discount, a free class, or a piece of branded merchandise can motivate members to leave a review. Just make sure to follow guidelines—some platforms have rules against incentivizing reviews, so check before you implement this step.

Positive Reviews Also Improve Website SEO

Each positive review does more than boost your star rating; it also improves your visibility on search engines. Google considers the quantity and quality of reviews when determining search rankings, so having a higher volume of reviews with relevant keywords (e.g., “jiu jitsu” “martial arts” etc.) helps your business appear in search results for relevant queries.

In addition to search engine benefits, reviews also help potential members make decisions faster. According to a study by Spiegel Research Center, displaying reviews can increase conversion rates by 270% compared to businesses that don’t display reviews. For businesses looking to convert online visitors into actual customers, reviews are invaluable.

Responding to Reviews: Building a Stronger Connection with Members

Another powerful strategy is to respond to reviews, whether positive or negative. By acknowledging feedback, you show members that you value their input, which can enhance loyalty. A polite, appreciative response to positive reviews builds goodwill, while a constructive, solution-focused response to negative reviews can help resolve issues and retain members.

For example, a simple response like, “Thank you for your review! We’re thrilled you enjoyed your experience and look forward to seeing you again,” adds a personal touch that members appreciate.

Conclusion

By asking members for reviews, you’re not only gathering valuable feedback but also building a stronger reputation online. Reviews provide social proof, enhance trust, and can significantly influence new members acquisition. Start by implementing a review request strategy, ensuring the process is easy, and considering incentives for added motivation. As you gather more positive feedback, you’ll create a cycle of growth that helps your business stand out.
